Seriously, has anybody ever damaged a disk (in this case, a CF card) by not ejecting it properly? Of course, if you yanked it out in mid-transfer, there might be issues.

Yes
I've had people render flash drives unusable by not unmounting them properly
Rare, yes, but it can happen

Yes I have. There is a possibility it will still be in mid-transfer.

Yes.
RIP, flash drive.

Nope, in 10+ years I've never had one problem.

Neither have I. However, I also make sure it's not in the middle of a data transfer.

Never have, yet people yell at me for doing it. I just wait until it stops reading and pull it out. Same thing goes for shutting computers down via the button. They think I turn them off without shutdown.
I've been reading that Windows is better than OSX in this case, and it doesn't make a random folder on the card.

I've only ever run Mac, and even as far back as OS 8, I never fouled a device by not properly ejecting it.

yeah, just so long as you give it a few seconds to finish up after the transfer is complete. Never had one unrecoverable incident.

This conversation is heading in some trippy innuendo-ish direction.

Yes. I just finished my homework for a program class and saved it, I checked to make sure it saved and it did. I tried to eject it and it would not eject so I was in a hurry and just pulled it out. I lost all my work and had to re-do it and my homework for another class. Also don not plug in two iPhones into a lap top at the same time. I lost my hard drive in the middle of a three page paper that was due the next day. Had to buy a new drive install the os and rewrite the paper. That was a long night.

I work in a repair shop. Not properly ejecting the drive is more of a risk to your operating system than the flash drive. I've done lots of data recovery off stepped on drives, but while it is rare, it does happen. When it does happen, its pretty bad. Dont let it happen to you!
Also, I have not seen a case specifically related to this on a mac, however, you should not aim to be the first!
